Overview

Tunes is a rehearsal studio that acts in the interest of local music by providing affordable practice space, good quality rehearsal, preproduction, voice-over, album, EP and single recordings and music lessons. Tunes retails in musical accessories and equipment, including guitar strings, drumsticks etc. as well as a wide range of guitars, amps etc, which can be ordered through Tunes Studio.

Retail:
Tunes Studio retails music equipment and accessories courtesy of Paul Bothner Music. At the rehearsal premises we stock guitar strings, drum sticks, plectrums etc. We also have a selection of guitars, pedals, recording equipment etc. Orders for music equipment and accessories other than the stock on the floor, are most welcome. Tunes Studio also retails local music. If you want to get a hard copy of your album on our display stand, or if you want expand your South African CD collection, feel free to contact us.

BUNDLED BOOKINGS bundle booking agreement

Groups or individual musicians can obtain membership from Tunes Studio in the form of a rehearsal agreement at R140.00 per hour. Exclusive membership entitles members to a discount on selected musical instruments and instrument related items and discounts on all instrument accessories (smalls).

This agreement is viable for two months and will be automatically renewed if the client does not notify Tunes Studio a month in advance of his/her wish to discontinue said agreement.

This rehearsal agreement allows a group/musician to book a minimum of eight hours per month (a dedicated time-slot in which this band/musician rehearses every week. The band/musician can book more than eight hours per month and can also agree to shift the rehearsal time-slot from week to week with sufficient notice in advance. Please note that in order to shift or cancel a booking, a notice is needed, 48 hours prior to the confirmed rehearsal time-slot.

RECORDING our studio

Tunes Studio offers both recording and mixing services for clients. The mixing and recording engineer, Mark Ellis, has worked at both Stellenbosch University and Valve House studios and has gained experience working on albums of artists like Stoker, Albert Meintjies and Roxton Met Herkie. Mark has experience as a recording and live engineer. He is an active musician, currently playing for Riku Lätti; Riaan Nieuwenhuis; Jake Gunn and Durge. With Jean and Mark’s knowledge, friendly and helpful attitudes, hard-working nature and results-driven approach, they create a perfect environment for artists to record in.

REHEARSAL ROOMS book space today

Tunes Studio has two fully-equipped rehearsal rooms with a four-piece Mapex drum-shell, three cymbal stands, a high-hat stand, a snare stand and a throne in each room.

Drummers need to bring their own snare drum, kick pedal and cymbals.

Studio 1 (the room at the back) is equipped with a 200W Yamaha 8 channel mixer amp with x2 150W Laney speakers and a floor monitor, as well as x3 vocal mics + stands & x3 cooling fans, guitar stands, amp stands and a music stand. There are x2 amps available for hire, x1 120W Laney bass amp and x1 100W Marshall guitar amp, (R30 per hour per amp).

Studio 2 (the front room) is equipped with a 16 channel Proel mixing-desk, a Proel 500W power amp and x2 250W Proel speakers. The room is also fitted with x2 cooling fans, a music stand, guitar stands and x3 vocal microphones, plus stands. Both rooms have been set up to deliver optimal acoustics. Storage space is also available at R50 per month per item, depending on size. A tuck- shop with standard beverages and snacks, as well as a lounge area enables clients to enjoy much needed breaks between rehearsals. Toilet and basin facilities are also available.

TUNES MUSIC LESSONS growth in music

Currently lessons are available for Drums / Guitar and Bass Guitar. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you are interested in learning any instrument not mentioned above. We will do our utmost to accommodate everyone. All students are welcome, (ability levels ranging from beginner to advanced) and lessons are priced at R200 per lesson.

The Teachers

DRUMS:
Jean Jacques Marais first started his musical career at the age of 12, when he co-founded his first band, Fudge. Shortly after his first steps onto the stage, he was asked to replace another musician to become the drummer for a second band as well. Over the following few years he performed regularly, and recorded three albums with the two groups, Fudge and Antipathy, while using the exposure to get to grips with his chosen instrument. He played a number of big festivals such as: Oppikoppi 2017, STRAB 2017, Ramfest 2013/2008, Grahamstown Arts and Music Festival 2004 and Woodstock 2004, to name but a few. Jean also recorded two albums with recognised and independent musician, Riaan Nieuwenhuis (former Delta Blue keyboardist) and he also recently started with freelance work for both: Jake Gunn, and Riku Lätti, who needs no introduction in Afrikaans music circles.

GUITAR:
Rory Skinner is a renowned guitarist in the SA music industry. He started at the age of 15 and now plays for two great performing bands, Titan guitar duo (a unique blend of flamenco and electric guitar) and Nebula Disrupt, (an extreme-metal band). Rory received his bachelor’s degree in music and music technology in 2012. He has also obtained grade 8 in classical guitar and grade 8 Rockschool.
